Most people know Korea for K-pop and a strong IT Industry, but have you noticed that Korea is the country with thousands of years of history and is a racially homogeneous nation?
If you are an international traveler, you might know that Seoul is one of the rare cities that has hundreds years historic footprints. You will see high-tech right next to thousand-year-old tradition. The palace is the one of the popular historical sites. The Chosun Empire ended in 1910, while Seoul was the capital of the Josun dynasty for the past 500 years. There are 5 important palaces you don't want to miss and they are the most popular sites for visitors.
What is your first impression of the word “Palace?” Is it a place for kings and noble families? That's true but only a part of it. You will see the area where kings and families lived with 2000 people to rule the whole nation. Only parts of palaces remain which makes many people think they're only for kings and family. The palace was the place for discussions on how to rule the country. The palace was like a huge company running a big organization, a nation where 2000 people worked together inside. Most people now understand the palace as only for the king and family after modern city development.
After the second world war, the family of the Korean empire became normal average people and there was no more empire. All the palaces belongs to the Republic of Korea. Does your country have a king and family? Do you still have a palace for them? There is no more king and family in Korean society, but most Koreans all remember them and their history as they are an all-important part of history, although it was not happy ending.
There were 2 big important functions of the palace. “Kweol” is where all governors, ministers, scholars and the king got together, had important discussions, and made decisions. “Koong” is located in the center of the palace where the king and his family stayed. You can enjoy it more if you understand that the whole palace was designed for efficiency of communication with people who visited or stayed there. There are places for politics, the living area for the king and his family, and gardens. Take a close look and experience how all the functions and locations were designed and connected. There are 5 palaces in Seoul. Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changkyeong-gung, Gyeongungung(Deoksu Palace), and Gyeongheegung.
Eastern Asian palaces are noted for the generally common characteristics of their design that includes “naturalism” and “humanism” but the philosophy behind and representation style element differed from country to country.
Spend a full day discovering the beautiful architecture and landscape of Seoul while learning about its history, culture and traditions. With your guide, visit two grand palaces, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Changdeokgung Palace, learn about traditional lifestyles at a museum, and explore bustling local markets on foot.

Hello. I am Sophie, Seoul city tour guide with Cosmojin Tour Company. This picture is with a very nice couple from Brazil. They booked a Seoul city tour and wanted to see the most popular tourist attraction in Seoul so I suggested Gyeongbokgung Palace. It turns out that this was a good suggestion. They were so fascinated by the Korean Traditional Royal Palace and was amazed at how such an old historical site that’s surrounded by nature coexist and harmonize with the modern surroundings of Seoul. They really enjoyed the Changing of the Royal Guard Ceremony, and their favorite location in the Palace was Gyeonghoeru pavilion which was built for important and special state banquets. By the end of Seoul city tour, they had good understanding of the Royal Family’s daily life and Korean culture.

Modifygood way to get a flavor of Seoul, the guide knowledgeable and kept the tour moving.
ModifySeoul has a nice combination of old tradition and modern flair. The ccity seems big but very organized. Lots of things to do and eat. :)
ModifySeoul is an astonishing combination of old and new. After walking around a royal palace with a memory of six hundred year history, you can join a herd of shoppers looking for a brand new style at a university campus area.
